It was beneath the ground on which they walked, a strange, tropical monument that stretched into the earth. It started out with a staircase into the abyss. As the two characters walked down they discovered a cave, a cleft in the planet. A ravine. The staircase was cut into a giant pillar that seemed to hold the place up- note that if one strayed too close to the edge it would be a very long fall. Below lay a maze of bones and vegetation. Perhaps it was once a lost civilization, but the homes cut into the walls of the ravine were desolate and empty, the only life residing being that of the large ferns and deep forestation. The only things that lurked here now were the large black snakes- perhaps spiritual remnants of Yaldaboath, the Denizen that was hidden somewhere on the world. These black snakes were quick, but their poisons were dried out- the challenge was not to bleed to death after their fangs were set. And in the distance, beyond all of the piles of bone, light flickered. A doorway was set into the stone next to a torch that had blazed for centuries, in a paradox time/space manner. On the wall lay an engraving of a strange scythe, with odd, spherical erosions around it. It's a puzzle, children. What will you do? [/style] |
