That just sounds awful. Such is life, Boss always says. We cannot exchange the hand we are given, but we can lay our cards down and shoot our competition in the face. To be honest, Raul wouldn't want to change his hand, anyway. For as long as he can remember he's been in the business of crime, even going so far as to say he was born into it (which is hard to say at all, since he barely has any memories of his childhood or parents). His adoptive parents (both drug smugglers themselves) managed to put him through a couple of years of school before being run down in the streets by gang members. Ever since, Raul's been on his own, living as a destitute orphan of the great city of Cali, Colombia.. And Cali has one rule: either you join the gangs, or you die in the streets. Though drug dealing was never what he intended to do, money and food don't come easy to children, so delivering "packages" to points all around the city seemed the easy route. With his natural running ability and complete discretion, Raul quickly gained notoriety as one of the swiftest delivery boys in the entire city. Sure, it got him beat up a couple of times, and almost killed twice, but a reputation in the city kept him well-fed and clothed, and even gained him his own home! Given, it was a shed, but it was a roof and four walls! A castle to a child. Living in Cali isn't easy, and Raul's seen his share of hardships, but he loves every second of life. How many kids can say they've been shot at and survived? Most of the ones in Cali, yes, but not many others! Living on the fast roads, running with the other uneducated boys (glad he at least finished grade school) up and down the alleys and favelas, he loves living on the edge, skirting the lines between life and death on a daily basis. All of that may sound grandiose and exciting, but there's a good reason for it. At the age of eight, Raul had a mental breakdown, and managed to find a doctor who diagnosed him with something called manic-depressive syndrome, more commonly known as bipolar disorder. He didn't know what it meant, but from then on he was subject to random fits of extreme depression. In some cases, he couldn't even move his body out of bed. Numerous medications were prescribed, but nothing seemed to really "fight off" the attacks. Except...for the one thing. Fire. The first time Raul came face-to-face with fire, he was eleven, and it was because someone had set his shack ablaze. Just another danger of working with bandits, right? Funny thing is, he didn't run. He just sat there, on his bed, watching the walls crumble and dissipate, until he finally had the good sense to get out before the roof caved in. But he still sat there after, watching the smoldering remains sizzle out and die. He couldn't understand why, but fire soothed his mind. It gave him peace, relaxed his frantic brain and chased away his depression. Fire was the solution, not medications or any of that other junk. He just had to keep the fires going, and he would always be fine. Of course, fire isn't a toy. Raul would set his fires, just to watch them burn, but more often than not his impulse would cause him to burn things that still had value, or on some occasions, still had people inside of them. Yeah, not the best way to relax, especially when people are screaming as their flesh melts off. Yikes. Eventually, he came under notice of The Boss, one of the more powerful drug dealers in the city, and was offered a deal: become the personal errand boy of one of the most dangerous men in the country, and get to live one of the most luxurious lifestyles available. He jumped on it in an instant. Now he's living in a tiny little room under the staircase in a giant mansion, living the dream and making the most out of life. He still doesn't know what his guardian's name is, where his life is going or what the future holds, but he plans to meet it with a heart full of fire and a smile on his face. ...that is, once he gets done playing this new game everyone's hyped up about. From his little room, Raul is fully connected to the World Wide Web, and has made a couple of close friends through random chat rooms and websites. A few of them have convinced him to play a new game, Sburb, as an "early-release beta tester." Just remember Raul, don't tell them you work for a drug lord. [style=font-size:14px; letter-spacing: 3px; border-bottom: dotted 1px white;]home[/style] ❧ Raul's not one that minds poverty. Hell, being raised in a shack, then living on his own for ten years, he's seen nothing BUT poverty. But now that he's working for the higher-ups, he's finally got his own little niche cut out into the face of "you're doing pretty good". He lives in a mansion, situated at the end of a very long road on top of a hill overlooking the city. On some mornings, Raul can climb to the roof and watch the sun rise to the east of the city, lighting up like the whole thing is on fire. It's truly beautiful. Raul hasn't counted the number of rooms in the mansion, but he'd take a guess at 20 or so. Raul's room is not big, by comparison to the normal room. It was never designed to be one, and in reality is actually just a cupboard under a staircase. He has room to fit in a small bed, big enough to accommodate himself, a dresser table that holds his clothes, possessions and laptop, and a small terrarium that houses his pet lizards. He also has two posters on the walls, for style: one, of the famous revolutionist Che Guevara, which was salvaged from an old factory on a run, and the other a promotional poster for Scarface. He's got a sense of irony in that last one. Coming to a theatre near you. It looks like a triangle emblazoned on the back of his jacket, but in reality it's a triangle emblazoned on the back of his jacket with meaning. [style=font-size:14px; letter-spacing: 3px; border-bottom: dotted 1px white;]fetch modus[/style] ❧ MOLOTOV MODUS: orange cards. The cards are individually stored in glass bottles, which are sealed off with rags. To retrieve each item, the bottle must be lit on fire and thrown, causing a wild outbreak of flames. Once the item has been retrieved, the fire dies out. Not something a child should really have, but Raul's got the handle on fire. Most of the time. [style=font-size:14px; letter-spacing: 3px; border-bottom: dotted 1px white;]powers & skills[/style] ❧ SPEED - Raul's best attribute. Years of running up and down narrow alleys and fire escapes has made him fleet-of-foot, and he can outrun anybody in the city. INTUITION - It's either Spider-Sense, or Lady Fortuna just takes a shine to him, but he always seem to know when bad shit's about to go down. Usually it just applies to deals, but sometimes it's more than that. A falling flowerpot, a chair about to snap, someone about to take a shot right at his head. Raul's sneaking suspicions have saved his hide more times than a few, that's for sure. [style=font-size:14px; letter-spacing: 3px; border-bottom: dotted 1px white;]medium[/style] ❧ The Land of Sand and Scales is not for those unaccustomed to heat. The planet is baked in the twin suns that orbit it, heating the sands that cover most of the planet to nearly the point of glass in some places. LOSAS isn't all dirt, though. Small pockets of water rise to the surface, and wherever they do you'll find the planet's CONSORTS, red PANGOLINS, setting up shops and small communities. Be careful when talking with them, though, as they will attempt to talk you into doing dozens of useless side-quests that only benefit them. Besides the spotty oases, there is one other defining factor of LOSAS: there are hundreds of thousands of rigid scales buried in the sands, varying from the size of quarters to the size of semi trucks. They are the remnants of dragons, ancient creatures that once flew the skies of LOSAS thousands of years ago. The scales are collected and prized by your consorts, used as protective shields and homebuilding materials. In the deserts, piles of them form mountains and hills, burial mounds that house the bones of the ancient wyrms. They say that beneath each mound lies the spirit of the dragon buried there, guarding an ancient treasure long forgotten. The dragons themselves, though, are long gone and dead. Or so it seems. Some of your consorts may say that they've seen dark, ominous shapes flying around the KARTHWASTEN, the largest mountain in LOSAS, which also serves as the home to your denizen, HEPHAESTUS. They also say that with each passing day, the ring of Hephaestus' hammer quickens and grows more frantic. Could the dragons be returning, after thousands of years? Why, and for what purpose? Does it have anything to do with Hephaestus' increased activity? Venture to the Karthwasten and find out for yourself, if you dare. Be warned though, Hephaestus does not take kindly to intruders, and may throw you into his forge. Exercise your legs is often the best means of escape, too. [/style]❧ FIRE - the common denominator of Raul's life. It all revolves around the flame. ❧ LIZARDS - maybe it's the close relation to the ancient fire-breathing dragons of old, but he just loves the shit out of lizards. Raul owns two Green Iguanas that live in his little room named Wey and Flaco. ❧ RELIGION - Like many people in his home country, Raul is very religious, and superstitious about it. He prays to the spirits for protection, in special Santa Muerto, the Lady of Death. She is the one who guards all spirits, and who comes to collect souls once they leave the world. He keeps a small statue of her in his dresser drawer, and places bread there every night. ❧ EDUCATION - Though his superiors would be hard-pressed to believe it, Raul strives to keep himself educated through the Internet. He prides himself on being the youngest English-speaking person in his circle of acquaintances. If there's a chance to improve himself, he takes it. |
