Her guardian makes enough to pay the rent and get them by, but it's not the easiest life. Gwen has no life. She's an anti-social middle-school drop-out, and one of the most hardcore gamers you've ever seen. She spends all her spare time sitting in front of her computer screen pwning sorry noobs and dueling storied badasses on mmorpgs. Barring multi-player options, she'll play on nightmare difficulty with no party, no power-ups, no items, no reloads, and with one hand tied behind her back, just because she can. Almost all of her friends were made online, and to them, knightObfuscator is a boy, because Gwen prefers it that way. She's vaguely worried what her teammates in Sburb will think when they find out, but she's more concerned about racking up the kills and leaving the other teams in the dust. She shares a tiny apartment in Brooklyn with her guardian, and you'll have to take out the kitchenette if you want to put in the alchemetizer. The walls have exposed brick and occasionally exposed plumbing (easier to fix, Gwen will tell you). There are only two rooms, a living room with an attached kitchenette, and her guardian's bedroom. A bathroom connects to the living room, and a nest of old newspaper under the sink serves as home to Gwen's pet mouse Beaky. Gwen sleeps on the living room sofa, and the coffee table is her computer desk. She built her own PC and OS, which means her desk is a mass of wires and harddrives with a fan spinning desperately to keep the heat down, but at least it runs like a dream. In the corner, there's a dinky music stand and an assortment of tin whistles stored in the niches in the wall. There are red bull cans everywhere. ❧ The Land of Night and Sand is a desert in perpetual night. It's usually pitch black, but a yellow moon rises at "night" (which is brighter than the day), which is enough to see by if you squint. Otherwise, night-vision goggles are recommended. An endless desert wasteland, LONAS is freezing cold with unpredictable and frequent sandstorms.

The occasional ruin half buried in sand are the only signs of actual civilization. Friendly, nomadic tribes of hedgehogs travel across the planet from oasis to oasis. They'll tell you that LONAS used to have many multi-colored constellations that kept the planet lit. The denizen, Sekhmet, has stolen the stars straight out of the sky.

❧ Travel to the Furthest Ring to set up a server to eventually (time is wonky there) host walkthroughs, pesterlogs, memos, gristtorrents, and whatever else the kids will need. The trick is traveling back from the Furthest Ring alive, sane, and not grimdark.
